To celebrate the one-month anniversary of the last time it snowed in
the Tahoe Basin, Andrew, Buffy and I decided to ascend an obscure and
difficult-to-access peak called Gun Notch.
It had been a bad season and there wasn't much snow up there. But the
weather was perfect and we had fun skinning up a convoluted, 4-hour
climb.
We saw lots of cool looking rocks.
As we approached the summit, the snow was melting in the sun and
freezing in the shadows and caking up all over our climbing skins.
But soon enough we were on the summit.
Gun Notch has panaramic view of the whole South Lake Tahoe area.
The whole Desolation Wilderness in one frame!
Mt. Tallac.
Job's Peak and Waterhouse.
The Nebelhorn and a Devil's horns.
Freel.
And across the lake, Mt. Rose without many snows.
The ride down, in 0-24" of slushy sugar snow mixed with rocks and
stumps, took almost as long as the climb.
But it was still great fun. Special thanks to Buffy for guiding us
all day!!
